Exhibition Stadsmuseum Woerden: Leo Gestel and Gustave De Smet; refugees – kindred spirits

Leo Gestel and Gustave De Smet; refugees – kindred spirits

Saturday September 7th 2024 t/m Sunday February 9th 2025

A million Belgians sought refuge in The Netherlands with the advent of World War. This country remained neutral during the war. Flemish artist Gustave De Smet was one of the refugees. In 2024 it is 110 years since he was cordially welcomed by Leo Gestel and his network of progressive, modernist artists.

Several years later, when De Smet returned to Belgium, he takes in Gestel when he sought to detach himself from his relationship crisis. Over the years the artists influence each other in both style and preferred topics. They also have corresponding ideals and vision of being an artist. But above all, Gestel and De Smet develop a lifelong friendship.

Both artists are seen as important innovators in the fine arts. Gestel (1881-1941) as one of the big names in Dutch modernism and De Smet (1877-1943) as a leading figure of Flemish expressionism.

Special project, from mid-December
More than a century after Gestel and De Smet initially met each other, the current refugee crisis seems more extensive than ever. That is why Stadsmuseum Woerden invites local and amateur refugee artists to view the exhibition together. The participants will analyze, converse and create new works of art together. Their works of art will be exhibited in the cabinet on the first floor from mid-December. It becomes clear art offers comfort! Relief even when you are displaced, among different people in a region unfamiliar to you. Enjoyment even when longing for your home country.

Will this collaboration lead to new friendships? Will there be – similar to our artistic duo Gestel and De Smet – reciprocal influence and impact?
