A million Belgians sought refuge in The Netherlands with the advent of World War. This country remained neutral during the war. Flemish artist Gustave De Smet was one of the refugees. In 2024 it is 110 years since he was cordially welcomed by Leo Gestel and his network of progressive, modernist artists. read more
