Exhibition Stadsmuseum Woerden: TOP FORM, Sport + Art

TOP FORM, Sport + Art

Tuesday October 7th 2025 t/m Sunday April 12th 2026

For many people, sport plays a major role in their lives, whether they are amateurs, top athletes, or avid supporters. It brings relaxation, enjoyment, and the connection of club life. But sport is also competition. You push your limits and deal with pressure from team members, a coach, or even the general public.

Mirror
Social, emotional, and societal themes that play a role in society are also addressed in sports. Sport is a mirror of society and therefore a source of inspiration for artists. This exhibition explores the intersections between sport and art, divided into four themes: amateur sport, sports clubs and their fans, elite sport, and breaking conventions, taboos, and old patterns.

From ceramics to video
The artworks tie in with the four themes and range from modern to contemporary and from paintings to textiles, ceramics, and video art. The nationalities of the artists are just as diverse. Works by Pat Andrea, Seeger Baas, Hermanus Berserik, Eline Brontsema, Michal Helfman, Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi, Antoine Peters, and Charley Toorop, among others, are on display.

Audio tour
A special audio tour has been created for this exhibition in the Bloomberg Connect app. In it, nine sports phenomena from Woerden reflect on their favorite works of art from the exhibition. In this context, they tell their stories about their own careers, hobbies, or roles in club life. The exhibition also features objects from each of them that are important to them.  In their own way, the nine athletes mean a lot to sport at the local, national, or international level. They are Charles Abramsen (Kromwijk and VEP tennis club), Dominique van Dalsen (dressage), Sven Dekker (javelin), Ellen van Dijk (cycling), Tim Gras (soccer), Ibtissam Issarti (soccer), Thijs Ros (athletics Clytoneus), Esther Vergeer (tennis), and Margriet Vermeij (Zegveld sports clubs).

Sports heroes
In addition to Woerden's current sports heroes, the ‘sports heroes of yesteryear’ are not forgotten either. A touchscreen in the exhibition and a projection outside the museum focus on figures such as the legendary cyclist Arie van Vliet and the women's volleyball team Valbol.

Various activities will be organized around this exhibition. Keep an eye on the website for more information.
